Coffee Pods Explained

Thousands of Americans drink coffee practically everyday, yet it is usually taken for granted, as hardly anyone wonders what it actually consists of. So it might be surprising to know that one small coffee pod is responsible for that delicious coffee taste that makes people coming back for more.

A coffee pod is made up of finely ground and roasted coffee that has been pressurized for taste then enclosed in paper. Around 6.8 to 7.0 grams of coffee is placed inside a standard size coffee pod, which measures about 44 millimeters.

Coffee pods were a concept that was thought about only fairly recently within the last decade, specifically, in 1996. Illy Caffe, who conceived the idea, then decided to market it to the coffee industry, since it provided another solution to the process of measuring the coffee. Because of this, many coffee machines were altered to make use of the new coffee pods.

One rather difficult type of coffee to make is espresso, because it involves a lot of measurements; make a slight mistake, and the result is an awful-tasting cup of coffee. This is where the coffee pod excels, as it is especially useful for making espresso. All it takes is placing a coffee pod in an automatic espresso machine, and out comes a great cup of espresso later on -- it's as easy as that.

Aside from the standard 44 millimeter coffee pods, sizes of 55 and 64 millimeters are also available. While the 44 and 54 millimeter pods are ideal for espresso machines, the 62 millimeter pods are better suited for machines such as the Black and Decker Home Caf and the Philips Senseo coffee machines. You should make sure to check the appropriate pod size that your coffee machine can handle, as using the wrong sizes could result in awful-tasting coffee or even break your machine.

For those who are fond of expanding their taste beyond the standard coffee flavor, coffee pods come in a variety of flavors like Amaretto, Irish Cream, Hazelnut and Vanilla. And the pods are not just limited to coffee -- tea pods are also available in different flavors like English Tea, Forest Fruits and Lemon Tea.

Coffee pods can be bought from places such as specialty coffee shops or online stores. Prices tend to vary depending on flavor, quantity and location. A recent trend lately has been the buying of imported European pods, which is considered to be fashionable. Still, regardless of price and origin, the coffee pod is a great and convenient way of brewing an unforgettable cup of coffee.
